Curu Wildlife Reserve

Famous Curú Wildlife Refuge, with a unique beauty has a great variety of wild life, and offers an ideal place to see and enjoy nature in secure and peaceful surroundings. With as little as 84 hectares, the Curú Wildlife Refuge is one of the smallest sanctuaries in Costa Rica. Despite its small size it boasts a rich and diverse wildlife as it encompasses five ecological habitats which range from tropical dry and moist forest to mangrove swamps and marine habitats. The protected forest of Curú forms part of the Biological Corridor of the Nicoya Peninsula.

In this area live more than 232 bird species, 78 mammalian, 87 reptiles, 25 anphibius and 500 types of plants. It is considered as one of the best place in Costa Rica to observe wild life. Of vital importance to the marine ecosystem is the fascinating habitat of the mangroves swamps. An immense number of small organisms living in the nutrient-rich mud of these swamps build the basis for the marine food chain. Here are the breeding grounds of many Pacific fish, and crowds of water birds feed and nest in the thickets. All five of Costa Rica's mangrove species are represented in Curú.
